Israeli Film Series / NEW Program for 5770

Hosted by Avi Glaser on four Saturday nights throughout the year starting October 17. Each free film will focus on an aspect of current Israeli society. Short Havdalah service precedes film. The Syrian Bride / October 17, 2009
From 2004, an award-winning film tells the story of Mona, a Druze woman getting married to her future husband Talal who lives in Syria. Her wedding day is the saddest day in her life because she knows that right after the ceremony she will have to cross the border and never see her family in Israel again. A fascinating view of political, social and personal situations in the Israeli Golan Heights.

Yossi and Jagger / January 9, 2010
In this 2002 film, an introverted company commander named Yossi and the uncommonly handsome unit leader nicknamed Jagger for his rockstar looks, have a secret. In the claustrophobic bunker installed on a bleak hillside, keeping that secret is difficult. Both are fighting for a cause they have little conviction for, and whilst Jagger is keen for a life of openness, Yossi clings to the rigid army structure. A crisis of love and war.

This 2007 film follows the story of alien workers in Israel. In recent years Israel has become a haven for foreign workers from all over the world. At thirty-seven, Miri is a twice-widowed, El Al flight attendant. Her well-regulated existence is turned upside down by an abandoned Chinese boy whose migrantworker mother has been summarily deported. A touching comic-drama in which two human beings accompany each other on a remarkable journey.
