A Message From Your Rabbis
Yesterday, George Floyd was laid to rest. But, the painful history of race in this country was not. This moment confronts us with an imperative. What is being asked of us right now is to internalize and live by the Torah verse, “Al ta’amod al dam r’echa," literally, "Do not stand upon your neighbor's blood," or often translated, "Do not stand idly by while your neighbor bleeds." (Lev. 19:16)
We Jews know the pain of being targets of hatred. Yet, many of us of Ashkenazi descent have benefited from the anonymity that light skin affords us in this country where skin color too often defines destiny. Living this Torah verse starts by affirming that black lives matter. It starts by not only re-committing to the principle of equality, but by helping to dismantle systems of institutionalized racism. It starts by listening and speaking out. It starts when we remember the words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, "Some are guilty; all are responsible." May this be a time of answering the call. We hope that the URJ "Act Now" resource and these two reflections by Black Jewish leaders in the Reform Movement will be helpful and meaningful. We hope you will join us in praying for peace for all people.
Our Building is still closed, but our Community is open. We remain connected to one another, engaged in Jewish life and learning,
and available to help one another in this time of need.

Temple Beth David has been a wonderful support for our Jewish neighbors who are living with food insecurity. Our donations of canned salmon and whole grain pasta are combined with donations from other congregations to provide much needed supplies to families in need.
With the pandemic, there is a greater than ever need for food. Here is how you can help!
Place an order on Amazon from the Family Table Wish list via this link.
(Quantities of 12 cans or 8 boxes are more helpful and less wasteful than delivery of single items). Be sure to have items shipped to the JF&CS Waltham location: 1430 Main Street, Waltham MA 02451
If you are able and willing to do delivery of food to families in need, either from Waltham or Canton, please contact Lisa Katz. Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support in this difficult time!
Are you celebrating a special birthday, anniversary, or lifecycle occasion? Let the Rabbis know.
