MAKING YOUR HOME A SANCTUARY

We look forward to celebrating the New Year with you in this different way. We are connected in spirit, and are so glad you are part of our Temple community. Here are two resources, Rabbi Karen Citrin's most recent Shofar article and a ReformJudaism.org article, about creating sacred space at home.

If you have any questions or need help in advance of services, reach out to us at info@templebethdavid.net and someone will get back to you.

SERVICES AND LEARNING

Please note that all in-person services (registration required, space is limited) are weather dependent. If we cannot be outdoors, all services will livestreamed from our sanctuary, except for the two Tashlich services which will be cancelled. All in-person services will be livestreamed as well. Please see the homepage of our website for any cancellations.

ZOOM NEEDS A PASSWORD

For security's sake, you will need a password to access Zoom services and study.  These will be sent by email to all congregants and all registered guests closer to the date of the events. Please save the passwords when you receive them. If you need them sent again, please email to request.

MISHKAN HANEFESH, OUR HIGH HOLY DAYS PRAYERBOOK

For those who do not have copies of Mishkan Hanefesh at home there are several options:

1.  A free digital version is available online. Please scroll down and click on the cover of the appropriate book to view. To use this during our holiday worship, it will be helpful to have a second device such as an iPad.

2.  Kindle editions of both the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur volumes are available for a cost of 9.99 each.

3.  We will check out our own copies of Mishkan HaNefesh to those members of our community who would like to borrow them for the holidays. Sign up here to select one of the designated dates. Pick up will be outside; you will not need to go into the building.

Please plan to return the books on Sunday, October 4 between 11:45 am and 12:30 pm, OR on Wednesday, October 7 between 7:00 and 8:00 pm. Please put a card with your name on it in the books when you return them. A charge will be put on your account for unreturned books.

Please contact Howard Allen VP of Religious Practices with questions.

4. A free digital version of Mishkan Hanefesh for Youth will be used during our Yeladim services.

INTERFAITH MINI-WALK FOR HUNGER/FOOD DRIVE

The mitzvah of tzedakah, righteous giving, is a core value of our tradition and culture at Temple Beth David. The prophet Isaiah, read on Yom Kippur, spoke of fasting as a reminder to do good and share our bread with the hungry. In lieu of our NAWDTY Food Drive, please join or support the Interfaith Mini-Walk for Hunger (40 Days for Food) or consider making a tzedakah contribution to the following organizations:

Westwood Food Pantry

The Greater Boston Food Bank

Jewish Family & Children’s Services - Support Family Table (please put Temple Beth David, Westwood in the gift message box)

INCLUSION RESOURCES

Gateways: Access to Jewish Education offers resources to help children understand what the High Holidays may look like during a pandemic. They include craft projects,  social stories and videos (Going to High Holiday Services on the Computer and Going to High Holiday Services Outside.)

TECH HELP

If you need help in advance of services, reach out to us at techsupport@templebethdavid.net and a tech-savvy TBD volunteer will arrange a time to walk through the process with you.  We will not have support available immediately prior to or during services. Please test your devices and connections in advance.

LIVESTREAM AND ZOOM

What Is Livestreaming?

Put simply, livestreaming is broadcasting in real-time to an online destination.  You can go live for a small, private group, or a huge public audience – there are no limits to viewers.

Typically, the livestream is organized by one person who serves as the host or director: Inviting guests to participate, screen sharing, playing prepared video.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is video conferencing. It is a private digital gathering, like on Google Hangouts or Facebook Messenger.

Platforms like Zoom allow people to tune in with a grid view (where they see the faces of every member of the conference) or with a speaker view (where the current person talking fills the screen).

What’s similar between Zoom and Livestreaming?

Zoom and livestreaming are both live! Both can feature pre-taped elements, but the thrust of the event is live, rather than a video simply uploaded to a social media channel.

TIPS TO CONNECT YOUR LAPTOP TO YOUR TV

We want you to experience the High Holy Days the best you can. Here are some tips and videos to help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DNme07mIqY  or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13UI1cdUODM

What do I need to physically connect my laptop to my flat-screen TV?

All flat-screen TVs offer at least one HDMI port, as do practically all non-Apple laptops that have been manufactured in the last eight years. HDMI is just about the best solution at the moment, as it supports both audio and video (HD and beyond). All you need, therefore, is an HDMI cable to connect the two. If you have an Apple computer, you will need an adapter to connect it to an HDMI cable.

  1.  Connect your HDMI cable to your TV and your laptop

  2.  Right click on your display

  3.  Go to multiple display

  4.  Choose duplicate display. This should now show your desktop on your TV. Some TVs will detect it automatically.

I have a wireless connection. Now what?

Below are general instructions to help you stream what you see on your smart phone, computer or tablet onto your TV screen.
Note: Each smart TV/ streaming device/personal device combination may be slighly different.

  1.  Turn on your smart TV (or your TV and streaming device, if you have Roku/Fire device)

  2.  Select the input type (smart TV) or app (streaming device) that allows you to stream from a smart phone, computer or tablet. Depending on brand, it can be called casting, mirroring, AirPlay, etc.

  3.  Ensure that your smart phone, computer or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi (wireless) network to which your smart TV/streaming device is connected.

  4.  Open the TBD livestream link on your smart phone, computer or tablet. Begin playing the livestream.

  5.  Depending on your device, you may already be seeing some controls. If not, you may need to tap/click on your device’s screen to see them. Locate and click on the “cast,” "AirPlay," or "mirror" button.

  6.  If prompted with options, select the smart TV/streaming device to which you wish to stream. At that point, your TV screen should be showing what you see on your device!
