The letter “mem” makes the sound “em” sound. Lots of words start with the letter “mem” like “menorah” which we use on Chanuakah or “mezuzah” that we affix to our door posts containing the words of Shema. This week the letter mem brings us the word “minyan.”Minyan (not minion!)is a counting of ten adults Jews that make up the minimum number of people to have a full prayer service or to read Torah in services. Minyan reminds us that it takes all of us to complete our community. Our Shorashim students are learning how to be part of our minyan!

As part of the B'nai TELEM (Boston area service-learning program), the 6th graders learned about the value of literacy and mitzvah of helping children read. They were surprised to learn that, "Two-thirds of American classrooms have fewer than 50 children's books and almost 60% of childcare centers buy fewer than one book per child per year" (JCRC Literacy Coalition Manual). In this spirit, the 6th grade class is holding a book drive through the month of January. Please donate new or gently used children's books for a general audience. Books will be donated to the Cradles to Crayons organization. They are highly in need of books for ages 8-12. Baby board books are also welcome. We all have books sitting on our shelves at home - let another child love them!
4th Grade Clothing Drive
Fourth grade is learning about "Middot - Jewish Values to Live By." Please support our 4th graders by contributing to their clothing drive for Cradles to Crayons! Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization that provides local children ages 0-12 with clothing and other basic essentials. You can bring new and gently used children's clothes to the donation bins here at Temple Beth David. Donations are welcome through Sunday, February 9. Winter clothing is especially welcome!
